How many images have you seen so far today on your laptop or smartphone? 5? 50? 100? The presence of images in our daily lives grows more and more, and with it, our patience for slow loading sites decreases. Optimizing image performance is essential for delivering a seamless user experience and it is our responsibility in Wix to provide effective solutions in terms of loading images. In the wow team, we adopted a pixel perfect approach, which ensures the highest fidelity to user design as possible. While managing to achieve good scores on image performance measurements, it is a paradigm that still costs us in performance in the client side. Enters the responsive images paradigm: a browser's native ability to select the most suitable image from a collection we provide, tailored to the site visitor’s screen dimension and resolution. In this talk I will take you through the pixel perfect and responsive images approaches, their pros and cons, and introduce you to the challenges we might have to transition to the responsive images paradigm in Wix.
