Being a “Fuzzy” in Tech: Finding Passion and Purpose in Building for Builders
Community / Networking, Marketing

In 2017, a former colleague published the book "The Fuzzy and the Techie: Why the Liberal Arts Will Rule the Digital World." In reading it, a lightbulb went on that helped me understand how I, a History student with graduate work in Education, had found my passion and my purpose in tech in Developer Relations. Building for builders not only required technical depth and expertise, but also curiosity, flexibility, communication skills, and the ability to connect disparate dots to tell compelling stories -- knowledge and experience gained through a liberal arts background. In this session, I'll share my journey from History student to educator to ad tech customer sales and eventually to Developer Relations, where I found that my combination of education and professional endeavors perfectly set me up to play a critical role in building and executing impactful developer programs. For attendees, I aspire for you to see the value of "fuzzy" expertise -- collaboration, communication, and storytelling -- in building highly successful technical programs, whether it's you bringing such skills to the table, or how to most effectively incorporate such expertise into your organizations.
Who’s Afraid of Little Old Gemini? Building Confidence in AI Tools Without Losing the Human
Content, Community / Networking, Marketing, Professional Development, Soft Skills, Data / AI / ML

I’ll be honest: my first reaction to GenAI was discomfort. I worried about what these tools would do to critical thinking, creativity, and human connection. Considering I had built a career in Developer Relations, this may seem ironic. But these new tools were more than APIs identifying sentiment in social media posts, or improving tagging systems for video content. This was technology poised to disrupt not only how engineers built apps, but how humanity surfaced and synthesized knowledge, and produced work. But the train had left the station, and "opting out" wasn't an option. I had to find a way to make AI a tool rather than a replacement. The secret? Treating AI like a highly productive partner rather than a replacement for my brain. In this session, I’ll share my journey from AI-skeptic to AI-empowered, highlighting practical workflows that keep the human in the driver’s seat.
We’ll dive into how to:
* Use Gemini to overcome writer’s block while keeping your unique personality intact.
* Efficiently synthesize research into compelling slides and marketing strategies.
* Adapt instructional content and technical curriculum for the modern era.
You’ll walk away with a pragmatic toolkit for writing, presenting, and teaching with AI—proving that you can speed up the "grunt work" to make more room for deep thinking and genuine connection. Because at the end of the day, you don't want to be the one who's "down bad" staring at a blank screen.
