Feeling overwhelmed by a massive codebase? You’re not alone. Whether you’re joining your first team or switching projects, understanding a large, complex system as a software engineer can feel like a black box.

In this session, we'll share a practical, step-by-step approach to navigating unfamiliar code with confidence, drawn from our experiences at Uber. You’ll learn how to start with the product vision, map directories to functionality, identify key elements, and use modern AI-based tools like Cursor to speed up exploration and understanding.

Mastering the skill of diving into a new codebase will accelerate your career growth by reducing ramp-up time, improving autonomy, and helping you make meaningful impact faster. If you’ve ever opened a repo and thought, “Where do I even start?”, then this session is for you. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. You don’t need to understand the whole codebase, just enough to make it yours.

With the growing technological advancements in AI tools, the role of engineers is expanding in exciting ways, freeing up time from routine implementation and unlocking more opportunities to influence product direction, user experience, and strategic decisions. Rather than just delivering code, today’s engineers are empowered to drive discovery, shape solutions, and create meaningful impact through data-informed, user-centered thinking.

This session explores how to grow into a product-minded engineer: someone who combines technical skills with product vision to drive outcomes. If you're passionate about building user-facing features and want to stay ahead in the evolving engineering landscape, this talk will cover strategies for cross-team collaboration, navigating trade-offs, prioritizing effectively, and using product metrics to make smarter decisions. Walk away ready to ship impact, not just code.

Have you ever felt stuck with your team and noticed that the methodology you implement for software development is a stumbling block instead of facilitating the work? Or is it demoralizing your developers by not giving them enough autonomy? We faced those issues, and after researching newcomers' agile approaches, we encountered Shape Up.

No development methodology fits all software teams. Mainly because they vary considerably considering their context, size, and mission. Are you or your team struggling with your development methodology? Join this talk to learn about the toolbox of techniques that have changed how many teams worldwide deliver their products. Maybe this alternative that states “stop running in circles and ship work that matters” is how to increase your team’s autonomy.
